Maytag Recalls Dishwashers Due to Fire Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.
Name of Product: Dishwashers
Units: About 1.7 million in the United States
Manufacturer: Maytag Corp. of Newton, Iowa or Maytag Corp. of Benton Harbor, Mich.
Hazard: An electrical failure in the dishwasher’s heating element can pose a serious fire hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 12 reports of dishwasher heating element failures that resulted in fires and dishwasher damage, including one report of extensive kitchen damage from a fire. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The recall includes Maytag®, Amana®, Jenn-Air®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand dishwashers with plastic tubs and certain serial numbers. The affected dishwashers were manufactured with black, bisque, white, silver and stainless steel front panels. The brand name is printed on the front of the dishwasher. The model and serial numbers are printed on a label located inside the plastic tub on a tag near the left side of the door opening. Serial numbers will start or end with one of the following sequences.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled dishwashers, disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it, inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire and contact Maytag to verify if their dishwasher is included in the recall. If the dishwasher is included in the recall, consumers can either schedule a free in-home repair or receive a rebate following the purchase of certain new Maytag brand stainless-steel tub dishwashers. The rebate is $150 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB7759, MDB7609 or MDBH979; or $250 if the consumer purchases new dishwasher models MDB8959, MDB8859, MDB7809 or MDB7709. Consumers should not return the recalled dishwashers to the retailer where purchased as retailers are not prepared to take the units back.

Thermador Oven Recall 2/25/10
BSH Home Appliances expands oven recall
BSH Home Appliances is recalling about 37,000 Thermador built-in ovens, expanding a recall of 42,000 from June 2007.
The ovens can have gaps in the insulation where overheating can occur and when used in the self-cleaning mode it can cause nearby cabinets to catch fire.
BSH Home Appliances has received three additional reports of incidents, including two that resulted in fires that damaged cabinets.
The ovens were sold at appliance and specialty stores nationwide from June 2004 through July 2007 for between $3,000 and $4,400.
Consumers should stop using the oven's self-cleaning mode and contact the company to schedule an inspection and free repair, if necessary.

MAYTAG EXPANDS RECALL OF REFRIGERATORS DUE TO FIRE HAZARD
WASHINGTON, D.C. - 8/26/09 The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Name of Product: Maytag®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand refrigerators
Units: About 46,000 (1.6 million units were previously recalled March 2009)
Manufacturer: Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa
Hazard: An electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator's compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 23 additional reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 4 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.
Description: The recall includes certain Maytag®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand side-by-side and top freezer refrigerators. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. Refrigerators with freezers on the bottom are not included in this recall. Hazard: An internal defect in the washer's drain pump can cause heat to build up, posing a fire hazard to the consumer.

General Electric Recalls Microwave Combo Wall Ovens Due to Fire Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of Product: Built-in Combination Wall and Microwave Ovens
Units: About 92,000
Manufacturer: GE Consumer & Industrial, of Louisville, Ky.
Hazard: The door switch in the microwave oven can overheat and ignite plastic components in the control area, posing a fire hazard to consumers. The lower thermal oven does not pose a hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: GE is aware of 35 incidents of minor property damage and one incident in which a fire damaged adjacent kitchen cabinets. No injuries have been reported.
Description: The recall includes GE combination microwave and conventional built-in wall ovens sold under the following brand names: GE, GE Profile® and Kenmore. The ovens were sold in white, black, bisque and stainless steel. The brand name is printed on the lower left corner on the front of the microwave door. The following model and serial numbers can be found inside the microwave oven on the left interior wall.

GE is offering a free repair or rebate on a new product, a $300 rebate toward the purchase of a new GE brand unit, or a $600 rebate toward the purchase of a new GE Profile brand unit. Sears is offering a free repair or $300 rebate toward the purchase of a new Kenmore brand unit. Consumers can continue using the lower thermal oven.

Units: About 2.3 million
Manufacturer: Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa
Hazard: Liquid rinse-aid can leak from its dispenser and come into contact with the dishwasher's internal wiring which can short-circuit and ignite, posing a fire hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 135 reports of dishwasher fires, resulting in product and/or property damage. Four injuries have been reported, including three reports of smoke inhalation and one serious hand laceration when operating a fire extinguisher to put out a fire in the dishwasher.
Description: The recall involves Maytag® and Jenn-Air® under counter or portable plastic tub dishwashers. The dishwashers have black, white, almond, bisque and stainless steel front panels. The following model and serial numbers are printed on a label located on the dishwasher's plastic frame on top of or to the left of the door opening. Consumers should contact Maytag to determine if their dishwasher is included in this recall.

Maytag® and SamsungT Brand Front Loading Washing Machines Recalled Due to Fire Hazard WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firms named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.
Name of product: Maytag and Samsung Brand Front Loading Washing Machines
Units: About 250,000 Maytag-brand units and about 20,000 Samsung-brand units
Distributor: Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa, and Samsung Electronics America Inc., of Ridgefield Park, N.J.
Manufacturer: Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., of South Korea
Hazard: Water leakage onto the electrical connections to the washing machine 's thermal sensor could cause an electrical short and ignite a circuit board, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received five reports of incidents involving ignition in the circuit board. Samsung has received one report of an incident involving ignition in the circuit board. No injuries, fires or property damage outside the washing machine have been reported.
Description and Models: The recall involves certain Maytag and Samsung brand front-load washers. The Maytag washers have model numbers beginning with MAH9700 or MAH8700. The Samsung model number WF306BHW or a model number beginning with WF316. Not all serial numbers are subject to the recall. The model and serial numbers are located on a tag at the bottom of the door opening. Maytag models with a serial number ending in the last two letters identified below are subject to the recall:

Sold at: Major department and appliance stores nationwide from April 2005 through August 2006 for between $1,000 and $1,200.

Remedy: Consumers should immediately contact the firm for information on how to receive a free repair. Consumers should not return the washing machine to the retailer where it was purchased.

Cash for Clunkers starts 4/22/10 in MD
The Maryland Appliance Rebate Program will begin on April 22, 2010. Purchases made before this date will not qualify for the ARRA-funded rebate.
The program is not retroactive, so purchases made before the program launches will not qualify for the rebate.
The Maryland Appliance Rebate Program will layer federal funding on top of the utility rebate programs, to provide consumers with additional rebates on other products. This means that you will be able to take advantage of both the utility appliance rebate and the Maryland appliance rebate at the same time. All rebates will be processed through your electric utility provider, and rebates are not retroactive.

Applications for the Maryland Appliance Rebate Program will be available through your electric utility provider on or after April 22, 2010.
Maryland will be offering a $300 rebate for ENERGY STAR electric heat pump water heaters, a new and very efficient piece of equipment. Stimulus funds will also provide $100 for super-efficient clothes washers and $50 for super-efficient refrigerators. These dollar amounts are in addition to any rebate offered by the utilities for ENERGY STAR models. BGE, Allegheny, Pepco, SMECO, and Delmarva Power currently offer rebates for other appliances, as well (see links above).

Only select ENERGY STAR qualified clothes washers and refrigerators are eligible for the rebates. These products must meet more stringent efficiency requirements, or tiers, established by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency. These standards exceed the current ENERGY STAR criteria for these appliances. Lists of qualifying models can be found below:

You can purchase qualifying appliances at any Maryland retailer or online, as long as you can prove that you paid Maryland sales and usage tax. You will need to submit relevant documentation (receipts, etc) in order to receive your rebate. Complete all fields in the rebate application and submit all relevant documentation or your application will not be processed. You will have to certify that you are replacing an old appliance of the same function. This means that you can’t put your old refrigerator in the basement as extra storage and still get a rebate for a new fridge – the purpose of this program is to save you energy and money by replacing your old appliance with a new one. We encourage you to take advantage of any utility or retailer appliance recycling programs. BGE and SMECO offer additional rebates for recycling, and many major retailers will dispose of your appliances for no additional charge.
*Allegheny Power requires recycling of your old operating refrigerator in order to receive a rebate
Purchases made on or after April 22, 2010 will qualify for the rebate. You may be able to take advantage of your electric utility programs if you’re looking to purchase appliances before then. The rebate program will not be retroactive.
www.energy.maryland.gov, Federal tax credits are available for Electric Heat Pump Water Heaters, but they expire on Dec. 31, 2010. For federal tax credit information, please visit www.energystar.gov/taxcredits. There are no state tax credits available for appliances at this time.
