Well Made Appliances are Hard to Find!

December 15th, 2011

Sears, the #1 appliance retailer in America has seriously reduced the amount of appliances they are sourcing (IE buying) from US companies. They are selling Chinese and other Far East imports under the Kenmore brand name. If you walk through other big box retailers you’ll see that Chinese appliances are flooding our market at an alarming rate (alarming to me at least)! These far east appliance manufacturers are using their own governments trade practices that are unfair to United States manufacturers (through currency manipulation and price subsidies) and using these advantages to capture market share in the US appliance industry. The media does not seem to be upset by this trend. I’m not making this point from a jingoistic perspective. Nor am I trying to talk people into buying the brands we sell at my company. I am seriously concerned as a citizen who has inside knowledge on the subject. My real life experience in the appliance service, sales and parts industry over the past 30 years has given me a bird’s eye view of how these Far East companies appliances perform over the long haul. Let’s start with thoughtless designs regarding ease of serviceability, take into consideration extremely poor parts distribution, weak to non-existent technical support, hard to read and understand wiring diagrams and schematics, and replacement parts becoming no longer available long before they should, and then you can better understand what we have been experiencing. These products are not going to give you the long term satisfaction that you hoped for when you made your initial purchase. Certainly modern appliances, regardless of the country of origin are being replaced after fewer and fewer years of life. This is due to a number of factors. The EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) have really squeezed manufacturers to design appliances that are energy efficient regardless of durability. The manufacturers are always looking at ways to provide a greater number of options to consumers and so have implemented the use of electronic controls in the vast majority of products being produced today. These electronic controls are not nearly as dependable nor as inexpensive to replace as their electro-mechanical counterparts. So here we are. Please talk to your appliance service professional before making a buying decision. I know if you were to speak to any of our technicians they would tell you Whirlpool, Kitchen Aid, Maytag, with Sub Zero and Jenn Air, (on the high end) all make excellent appliances. Call our office at 410 682-3232 and speak to me (ext 101) or my service manager Jim (ext 105) for more specific information.

Halloween Costume Cleaning Tips

November 3rd, 2011

It’s all about the candy!!! If your kids are like mine were and now how my grand kids are they are not concerned with keeping their Halloween costumes cleaned. Trying to monitor the type of goodies they are receiving, their caloric intake, and their general safety is about all one can hope to accomplish as a parent. The costume is going to get dirty (especially if you are dealing with boys)! I found a very helpful article by Michelle Savin, who is an eco-stylist from California. She is an expert on organic and eco-friendly family living, the founder of organic bedding line Until Kara and can be followed at Organic Conscious Mom. The article appeared in a blog from the Retail observer magazine a publication of the appliance sales industry.
For stains you can go to our web site http://www.landersappliance.com/tips-maytag-amana-sears-appliance-service-sales-baltimore-maryland-md.php#stain or follow the directions given in the article

Reliable Dishwashers

October 27th, 2011

Our service repair records line up with information published recently in a leading consumer magazine regarding dishwasher reliability. We have found a substantially higher need for repair regarding LG (formerly Lucky Goldstar) compared to most other brands. In speaking with customers looking for a new dishwasher most are concerned with how well the dishwasher cleans the dishes and how easy they are to use since there is very little difference in the EPA’s Energy Efficiency rankings and basic noise levels in similarly priced models. Customers seldom take into account repair history when considering a new dishwasher and they should!!! BTW – all new (7 years and newer) take a lot longer (90 +/- minutes) to complete the cycle than older units. Any questions E-mail me dlanders@landersappliance.com

CFL Light Bulbs Can be Dangerous

July 13th, 2011

This effort to push energy efficiency through CFL light bulbs has very serious side effects when not handled properly and most people have no idea how serious it can be, including it seems the federal government. Did you know that a broken CFL light bulb poses a serious health risk to you and anyone else, including pets that are located within the room of the bulb breakage?

Washer Capacity Ratings

May 20th, 2011

Did you know that until very recently all of the major washing machine manufacturers used a variety of sizing formula’s in order to determine the tub capacity of their entire line of washers? Front loaders and top loaders, high efficiency or standard, each manufacturer advertised a size that was determined without an industry standard! Consumers had no chance to compare apples to apples in size ratings. With the help of the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) the individual companies have finally all agreed to a worldwide standard which each manufacturer will use in sizing their washing machines capacity. Hurrah for the consumer! But beware, existing inventory still has old sizing labels sure to cause confusion and chaos.

Automatic Dishwasher Cleaning Tips

October 22nd, 2010
Since the phosphate ban has been in effect we are getting more and more comments and complaints about poor cleaning in automatic dishwashers. I’ve cut and pasted a few frequently asked questions from the Cascade web site and also added my own comments and suggestions.

Q: Why is Cascade taking phosphate out of your formula?

A: Cascade products will comply with all Local and State regulations that require the removal of phosphate by July 1, 2010. By this date, all Cascade automatic dishwashing products in the U.S. will be phosphate free.

Q: What does phosphate do?
A: Phosphate is the main ingredient in most automatic dishwashing detergents and serves many functions. For example, phosphate helps with dishwashing performance by facilitating food removal, removing the calcium that binds these types of foods together and reducing spotting and filming during the wash cycle. Phosphate also aids in grease removal, helps control water hardness, and suspends soils within the wash water so they are not redistributed onto plates.

Without phosphates dishes are not going to get as clean without some attention! That is a fact we will have to learn to deal with. Here are some suggestions to help provide cleaner results from your automatic dishwasher:

  • Besides just scraping, also rinse your dishes before putting them in the dishwasher. I know the dishwasher manual says you don’t have to rinse but it will improve the dishwasher performance.
  • Follow the loading instructions for your specific brand dishwasher. Don’t think because you’ve been using a dishwasher for 30 years that you have a lock on the proper way to load. Read and follow your dishwashers loading instructions!
  • Try to run your dishwasher when no one else in the house is using hot water. Most  dishwashers are time filled with the expectation that your house has constant water pressure providing a solid flow of water into the tub.
  • Run your kitchen faucet for several minutes prior to turning on the dishwasher to insure the water entering the dishwasher during the first cycle is hot.
  • Use the heated wash cycle to insure a hotter water temperature.
  • Turn your hot water heater up so that the water coming to the dishwasher starts at 140 degrees F
  • Use more additives such as Jet Dry, or specific types of detergents to address the specific results you are experiencing.

automatic dishwasher oversudsing

October 15th, 2010

If you have a dishwasher that is oversudsing, it is normally due to using the wrong type of detergent. If you mistakenly use a hand wash detergent it will create a huge amount of suds and pour out of the front door. If that happens, you can neutralize the suds by pouring olive oil directly onto the suds. Shut the door of the dishwasher and continue the cycle. The olive oil works like magic and breaks down the hand wash dish detergent and stop the unit from oversudsing.
