Amana History

Amana Appliances are an American tradition. The Amana brand is like baseball and apple pie, although the brand has never achieved the success of those American icons. Amana, the brand, originated in the farm country of central Iowa. Amana was the inventor and manufacturer of the first microwaves commercially produced for home use. The Amana microwave was known as the Radar Range. The Amana Radar Range were huge compared to today’s microwaves, they weighed a ton, were powered with a 1500 watt magnetron tube, cost an arm and a leg and lasted forever. I wish I still had mine! I always found the product easy to service. Many parts were able to be replaced at the component level as opposed to requiring an entire board replacement as is the case with appliances built today.

Expansion into Other Appliances

Using the goodwill and name recognition from the success of their microwave, Amana expanded into the production of other appliances, most notably the bottom freezer refrigerator. In fact, up until a few years ago Amana was the lone producer of all of the bottom freezer refrigeration products on the market. With the advent of the French door refrigerator and its growing popularity other brands began competing with Amana for that market segment. An interesting, little known fact is that the first French door refrigerator built by Amana was actually sold under the Whirlpool name (this type of outsourcing is a very common occurrence in the appliance industry).

Collaboration with Speed Queen and Acquisition by Maytag

Amana worked out a deal with Speed Queen and began selling the Speed Queen washer design under the Amana label. The Amana washing machine had been redesigned to mimic the Maytag Dependable Care washer product and failed miserably. As a result they became an easy takeover target. Their own Iowa neighbor, Maytag seized the opportunity and purchased Amana in the 1990’s.

The Amana refrigeration line was especially valuable to Maytag as they had had a poor history in producing a sound refrigerator. The Amana sealed system was and still is a very long lasting, solid design. Maytag began leveraging the strength of the Amana products to boost their own sales. Unfortunately Maytag put too much stake in the poorly designed top load washer and not enough into their own research and development. The Amana designed S-Series washer was a tremendous failure and delivered a severe blow to the parent company’s reputation and profitability.

Amana Under Whirlpool Ownership

The Amana brand today, under the ownership of Whirlpool, has been positioned as a value brand. Amana offers very few model choices, and for the most part the products have scaled down options and are inexpensive. The exception remains the Amana French door refrigerator. Even as a value brand the Amana product is still a solid option to other value brands on the market. As a service company we have not seen or experienced any major issues with the Amana brand since the S-series washer, which was taken out of production around 2003 or so.
