Best Tips for Washing Sweaters

Keep warm and keep clean this season with these sweater washing tips!

Sweater weather is officially here, and it is once again time to take care to not shrink those lovely warm garments! However, there could be times when shrinking your clothing is the goal, and we have a separate article on that here. Washing sweaters is perhaps one of the most difficult laundering challenges of our modern day. Below are the best tips for washing sweaters and keeping them pristine!

Detergent

The fact is, you can use virtually any kind of detergent other than bleach to wash your sweaters. Your average laundry detergent, commercial or homemade, will work wonderfully as long as you do not use too much. Doing this would certainly leave your woolens thick with soap. You can also use Woolite to wash your winter clothes, as it only has a pH of 7 and is not too harsh as people might say.

Water Temperature

Remember to always wash your sweaters with cold water. In hot water, the fibers of your sweaters, especially natural fibers, will congeal and cause the woven material to shrink. The only way to wash sweaters is with cold water.

Cycle

It is usually safer to wash your sweaters on a gentler cycle. Too much friction could cause the sweater to fray or pill or snag. Therefore, it doesn’t hurt to wash your sweaters in one load with other delicate garments on the gentle cycle. Minimizing cycle time can also help with keeping your sweaters in good condition.

Drying

When it comes time to dry, invest in a drying rack or recruit some chairs or hangers to allow your sweaters to air-dry. Hot temperatures, wet or dry, will almost guarantee you a shrunken sweater. This goes for putting sweaters in the dryer as well, so it is best to leave them out in the open.

Everyday Maintenance

Other ways to keep your sweaters clean and in good condition is to minimize washing frequency and store them properly. You can limit the number of times they need washing by wearing a garment underneath the sweater and taking care to not soil it with spills or dirt. When spring comes again, it is best to wash them first before storing them in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight.
