Common Ice Maker Problems

Common Ice Maker Problems landers appliance

We have a guide to common ice maker problems, how to diagnose them, and in some cases how to fix them yourself.

It’s an all-too-common story: you install an ice maker thinking that you won’t have to worry about refilling ice trays ever again, only for one of many common ice maker problems to occur, leaving you back where you started. It’s a frustrating ordeal, made even more frustrating when you’re trying to troubleshoot but don’t know where to start.

We have a guide to common ice maker problems, how to diagnose them, and in some cases how to fix them yourself. If you’re unsure, contact the pros here at Landers Appliance today.

Clogged Water Filter

Water filters help reduce the number of contaminants in your water, but over time, they can get clogged up by particles which in turn means less water for your ice maker. The result? A decrease or complete stoppage in ice production. Change your refrigerator’s water filter regularly and especially so if you’re having problems making ice, odd-tasting water or ice, or if anything is visually off with your ice.

Broken Water Inlet Valve

Your water inlet valve is what opens and closes to allow water into your ice maker. If there isn’t enough pressure (less than 20 psi), the valve won’t let enough water into your ice maker, meaning you won’t be able to make ice. If you changed your water filter but still aren’t making ice, this is one of the most common ice maker problems you should look to next and may require you to call in a professional.

Incorrect Temps

If your fridge or freezer’s temperatures are set too high, it could result in slowed ice production or no ice production at all. On the flip side, you may end up with a frozen water line if your machinery is set too low. This one’s easy—just take a look at your temperature settings and ensure your freezer is set to 0°F and that your fridge is between 33–40°F. If anything’s frozen, you may need to use warm water or air to defrost the lines.

Ice Clumping

One of the most common ice maker problems is for the ice to clump up, making it difficult for the auger to break it up or even getting caught in your dispenser’s chute. Remove small chunks of ice or break them up to get your equipment working once again.
