Signs You Need a New Oven

Signs You Need a New Oven

Think you might need a new oven? Here are some sure signs.

With holidays coming up at the end of this year like Thanksgiving and Christmas, you will probably have friends or family coming your way. No matter what time of year it is, having a working stove is a must for any functioning kitchen. If you are wondering if it’s time to replace your range, here are signs that you need a new oven.

It Won’t Turn On

If you have a gas stove and it doesn’t turn on, it may be because of faulty spark igniters, which one can solve by using a gas lighter. If it is an electric stove, there is an issue with the wiring. If so, you will likely need a replacement, as faulty wiring can cause a fire.

You See Corrosion

If your stove has rust or corrosion, it isn’t safe or sanitary to cook with it. Rust can both affect how well the range cooks and pose a health hazard, as pieces in the oven can fall into the food.

There’s a Crack in the Glass

If your range has a smooth glass surface interrupted by an unmistakable crack, you will also need to replace it. Meanwhile, a crack in the glass oven door will affect the cooking process and use up more electricity or gas than necessary.

The Controls Don’t Work

If the controls stop working as they once did, it is likely a sign that the oven is getting old. The average lifespan of electric and gas stoves is between 13-17 years, though gas ones generally last longer than electric. The control panel is one of the costliest parts of a range, so it is likely more affordable to replace than repair.

You Smell Gas

If there’s a gas leak, you should be able to smell it because of the fragrance added to it if it escapes. Immediately turn off the stove and open the nearby windows and doors. For gas stoves, check that the tubing is attached.

The Burners Heat Unevenly

If the burners are heating unevenly, it may be because something like rust is inhibiting their performance. First clean and inspect the cool grates, burners, and coils. If there is still a problem, contact an appliance repair professional for a deeper inspection.
