Cooking with Your Microwave Oven

Cooking with Your Microwave Oven

Improve your microwave cooking skills with these considerations and tips!

A microwave oven is your go-to for quick meals and heating your leftovers, but several measures can help you make sure you get the best results every time. Below is a look at some factors and tips in making the most out of your microwave oven.

Type of Microwave Oven

Microwaves these days can come in three main models that have different cooking abilities. First is the regular type, which dethaws and heats up food and beverages through microwave radiation. There is also the grill microwave, which can both grill your meats and vegetables along with its regular functions. The combination microwave, meanwhile, has a convection feature like that in the toaster oven. Size can also affect your microwaving prowess, as a larger model may have more power and more capabilities.

Type of Container

Never put metal in a microwave oven; doing so will start a fire. Plastics are safe only if they have a microwave safe label on them. If you use plastic wrap over the container, don’t let it touch the food.

Cover Up

Better yet, use a plate or microwave-safe cover to insulate moisture in the food and contain splashes. However, never use an airtight cover, as this could lead to an explosion.

Food Distribution

Besides keeping food moist and avoiding a microwave catastrophe, ensuring even cooking is another significant aspect. Spread the meal evenly around the plate and make room in the middle if you can. Microwaves cook food from the outside in, which can leave the center colder than the rim.

Power Settings

Microwave ovens have power settings, and by default, they always cook food on “high.” Adjusting the power level, however, can increase your microwave finesse exponentially. Specific settings can warm or defrost as much or as little as you wish.

Standing Time

Letting your food stand for a minute or two in the microwave oven is actually necessary to complete the cooking process. The meal continues to cook as it remains in the radiated oven, settling on a more or less even temperature throughout it.

Address Malfunctions

If you notice your appliance starts to make strange noises or has abnormalities like a door that won’t shut completely, hold off on the food prep. Address the issue quickly to see if it can be repaired or if it’s time to get a replacement.
