What role does a water line play in a fridge? Learn about it here!
If you are looking to install a new refrigerator, you know that it needs a power source. All refrigerators need electricity to run, but some also need water to function to their fullest. Do all fridges need a water line? It’s a common question!
What Is the Refrigerator Water Line For?
It’s easy to think that refrigerators need a water line to keep provisions cold, but they actually do not. Refrigerators use refrigerant, condensers, and evaporators to extract heat out of the fridge and freezer, leaving the interior at the desired temperatures.
So, what is the water line for in a fridge?
- Ice maker: You can’t make ice without water! The water line feeds tap water into your freezer directly so that its ice maker can work.
- Water dispenser: You also get chilled water through the water line as processed by your refrigerator.
- Defrosting: Some refrigerators use the water line to defrost them as well.
Pros and Cons of Having a Fridge Water Line
Is it worth having a fridge with a water line? Here’s what you can gain.
- Fresh ice and chilled water
- More counter space (without a portable ice maker)
- Potentially more energy-efficient refrigerator
What about the downsides? Are there any?
- The potential for leaks and blockages
- Maintenance to avoid the above
- Installation cost, if you do not have one already
Should You Get a Fridge with a Water Line?
If your home already comes with a water line to connect to a refrigerator, it is probably best to get a refrigerator that uses a water line. You can enjoy fresh ice and water straight from the fridge without having to use up counter space to provide yourself with the same things. If you want purified water from your fridge, there are devices for just that. The alternative is to use a portable ice maker and a separate water pitcher kept in the fridge.
