How Often to Wash Your Clothes

How Often to Wash Your Clothes

Is there an ideal frequency for washing clothes? Here are some answers.

Doing the laundry is a chore that many people consider a rote routine. Indeed, washing your clothes to maintain their pristine looks and cleanliness is a strategy and science. To help keep you looking your best and keep your clothing and more in their best condition, here are several tips on how often to wash your clothes.

How Often to Wash Undergarments

The answer to how often to wash your clothes depends on numerous factors, one of which is the type of clothing it is. Undergarments such as underwear, bras, socks, and stockings are closest to the body and therefore receive a greater level of dirt, sweat, and skin cells daily. The garments closest to the skin tend to need more frequent washing. One can wash lingerie and other undergarments on the delicate cycle, especially if washed separately. One can line dry them or dry them on low or delicate heat.

Shirts, Pants, Jackets, & More

Everyday wear, sleepwear, outdoor wear, and formalwear also have different prime washing frequencies. Here is a short list of suggested washing frequencies:

  • Shorts, pants, and shirts can go into the wash once every 1-2 days
  • Jeans can have 3-4 wearings
  • Sweaters can go for 6 wearings; however, if worn without an undergarment, 1-2 days
  • Dress pants, skirts, and dresses may have 3-4 wears before washing
  • Suits, blazers, and jackets can have 5-6 wears
  • Workout clothes: one wear before washing
  • Sleepwear: 2-3 wearings

One must keep in mind that a clothing item needs to go into the laundry basket if it is soiled. Dirt, fluids, food, and other grime need to be expelled from the clothing as soon as possible. In general, however, the closer the garment is to your body, the more frequently it needs laundering. Towels & Bedding

Towels and bedding can both be a breeding ground for bacteria and even mildew. It is never a good idea to let them go unwashed for a very long time. However, washing too often will wear them out faster and cost you more water. A good rule of thumb is to wash bedding once a week and wash towels after three uses. Washing your bedding and towels together in hot water will give you a well-sized laundry load and a sanitizing clean. Who doesn’t want fresh, bacteria-free bedding and towels?
