How to Keep Dark Clothes from Fading

How to Keep Dark Clothes from Fading Landers Appliance

You can keep clothes for longer with these fade-resistant tips!

All clothes fade eventually, but it can be annoying for sure when our smart, dark clothing becomes dull, faded, and worn. Washing and drying clothes is more than just a chore; it’s a way to preserve and care for your clothing that requires strategy. If you are looking to keep your dark clothes from fading, you’ve come to the right place!

Read the Instructions

The first step to keep dark clothes from fading is simple: read the instructions. Take special note of the clothing labels to know exactly how to wash each garment. Even though it may be simple enough to throw everything in the wash and set to normal, it will be best for each item if you follow the guidelines set by the manufacturer. The only exception is with dry-clean-only clothes; if they are made of wool, linen, silk, or cotton, it is still possible to wash those items according to best practices for those materials.

Sort and Separate

You may have heard about sorting and separating clothes into different batches for washing. You might also, like many others, think that this is an extra, unnecessary step. However, if keeping clothes from fading is your ultimate aim, then you will find this step beneficial. Fading occurs due to friction and fibers breaking apart, releasing the color. Therefore, washing dark delicates with rough-and-tough jeans won’t bode well for the former articles.

Wash Accordingly

The best way to preserve your clothing when washing is to treat each item according to its unique or not-so-unique washing instructions. Some other ways to help keep your clothes from fading is to turn all garments inside-out to avoid friction between buttons, zippers, and fabrics, avoid overstuffing the laundry machine, and wash with cold water as much as possible. It can also help to use a detergent that preserves dark and bright colors and fabric softeners, which can reduce garment friction.

Dry Gently

The drying process can also affect how much your garments fade over time. The lower the heat, the less likely your clothes will get stressed out. If possible, air-dry your clothing on a drying rack for an even more stress-free drying process.
