How to Choose a Dishwasher Size

Dishwashers do come in more than one size; here are some tips on how to choose the right one!

Buying a new dishwasher is not something one does very often. In some cases, one might simply do without this appliance altogether. However, when it does come time to replace the dishwasher, many people wonder whether or not they all come in one size, or if there are differing dimensions out there. Indeed, dishwashers can come in different sizes; with these easy tips, you can be on your way to choosing a dishwasher size that’s right for your space.

Standard Dishwasher Size

While some dishwashers are larger or smaller than others, there is a standard dishwasher size. This standard size is 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 35 inches tall. Even if the actual machine is a little narrower, it may be listed as 24 inches because that is its necessary clearance. These details should be listed in the product description.

Measuring Your Space

It won’t do to just buy a standard dishwasher size without first measuring your actual space, though. To know exactly what your kitchen can fit, you’ll need to measure the width, height, and depth of the available space. It is best to do so when no dishwasher is occupying the opening. Measure the width on the top and bottom of the opening, and the height and depth on the left and right sides. With two measurements per dimension, you’ll capture any differences in spacing. Always use the shorter measurement.

Considering the Interior

Even though the exterior of a dishwasher may be larger or smaller, it does not mean that the interior sizing will correlate. A standard dishwasher can have a larger or smaller interior storage capacity, depending on its construction and storage features. For example, some models have third racks to house cups and mugs or baking pans. The interior capacity will also be listed in the product details. All in all, a typical dishwasher will be able to fit 10-12 place settings, each of which includes the following items:

  • Salad plate
  • Dinner plate
  • Bowl
  • Saucer
  • Mug
  • Glass
  • Knife
  • Salad and dinner forks
  • Two teaspoons

Other Considerations

If you plan on putting unusually-shaped or larger items in your dishwasher, one can find models with flexible racks that allow for larger items. If you are looking for an unusual dishwasher, one can try out the drawer dishwasher.
