6 Signs You Need a New Dishwasher

6 Signs You Need a New Dishwasher

Does your dishwasher display these troubling symptoms? It may be time for an upgrade.

At some point, your dishwasher may start to show some signs of wear and tear. The point at which you will need to get a new one will reveal itself through various symptoms. While it may be better to repair your appliance rather than replace it altogether, some cases call for an upgrade. Below are six signs that a new dishwasher is the right choice for you.

A Note of Caution

As mentioned above, there are plenty of instances where all a dishwasher needs is a minor repair. Before chucking the old one out as soon as something goes wrong, check to see if your machine’s issue can be fixed with relatively low ease and cost. You’ll save money in the long run and get all the life that your dishwasher has to offer.

1. Your Dishwasher Is Ancient

Depending on how old your dishwasher is, you may simply want to replace it. After ten years of use, or longer if it is especially well-maintained, if a good rule of thumb for when it’s time to retire the appliance. Machines become less efficient over time, and newer models are generally designed with more finesse to start.

2. It Has Rust

If you see rust in the interior of your dishwasher, it is either due to contents, especially metal ones, touching the tub during a wash. An empty cycle with citric acid should clear that up right away. If that is not the case, and you see rust on the outside of the machine, you may have a water leak on your hands. A technician can assess whether it will cost you more to repair or replace.

3. Pooling Water

Water in mugs and droplets on dishes are normal, but a pond forming at the bottom of your dishwasher’s interior is not. It signals a drain blockage, which you could easily solve if it is due to some debris. However, if the issue is with the drain itself, you may want to consider buying a new dishwasher.

4. A Door That Won’t Close

If your dishwasher door cannot lock shut, your dishwasher cannot run. This is certainly a problem. Call a professional repairman to replace the lock. The worst-case scenario is that a water leak has warped the door so that the entire door doesn’t fit into its frame anymore.

5. Cool Dishes

Dishwashers are beneficial partly because of how well they sanitize through hot, steaming water. If your dishes are coming out cool, there may be a problem with the heating coil. Replacement may be the most cost-effective option.

6. Unusual Noises

If your dishwasher suddenly starts making guttural noises at you, it may be a problem with its motor. Call a professional to inspect the issue. Often, though, a motor replacement is more costly than getting a new machine.
