How to Clean a Clothes Dryer

How to Clean a Clothes Dryer

Make your clothes dryer fresh as a daisy step by step.

Deep cleaning your home is a necessary way to keep it in spick and span condition for the health of your home and family. No small part of spring cleaning is the kitchen and laundry, and that includes the clothes dryer. Here, you can find a detailed look at how to clean a clothes dryer, step by step.

Why Clean the Clothes Dryer?

If you never clean the clothes dryer, it could pose a fire hazard. The dust could catch fire due to the dryer’s heat. You would be surprised to learn how often dryer fires occur in the United States, averaging over 15,000 fires a year, according to NFPA.

Aside from saving your home and family, cleaning the clothes dryer prolongs the dryer’s lifespan, yields cleaner clothes, and looks great. It is worth having a functional, clean clothes dryer.

How to Clean a Clothes Dryer

Before you begin, it is a good safety precaution to disconnect your appliance from its power or fuel source to avoid accidentally operating it while cleaning.

Clean the Lint Screen

Remove the lint screen and remove lint and dust by hand. Then, soak and gently scrub it in hot water and let it dry. While it dries, clean out lint and dust from the lint trap with a tool or by vacuum.

Clean the Dryer Interior

Next, use a soft, wetted cloth to remove dust from the dryer’s interior. You can also use a non-flammable, gentle cleaner to wipe down the clothes dryer’s interior. A white vinegar and water solution is a safe option. Allow the interior to dry.

Clean Behind & Around the Dryer

Next, move the dryer out from the wall. You might need to enlist help to move it. Clean the floor in this area, removing dust, dirt, cobwebs, etc. First remove loose debris and then mop.

Clean the Dryer Vent

Use a screwdriver, if necessary, to remove the dryer vent clamps attaching the dryer to the vent. Once open, use a dryer cleaning brush and a vacuum to remove built-up dust within the vent. Go to the other end of the vent, located outside your home, and repeat the process.

Clean the Dryer Exterior

Finally, wipe down the dryer’s exterior. Removing dust, dirt, and stains from the outside can also make a difference and make it look great.
