How to Make the Most Out of Your Dishwasher

How to Make the Most Out of Your Dishwasher

To learn how to better run your dishwasher, check out these nifty tips below.

The days of washing all the dirty dishes by hand and towel are but a mist of a dream. Today we have the clean steam of the dishwasher to assure us that all our dirt and grime are washed away. Our dishwasher is one of our most often-used appliances of our households, and many have been the debates on how to make the most of it. Below are some overall tips on how to make the most out of your dishwasher.

Remove Excess Gunk

Before you load up your dishware, remind your kids to remove excess food from their plates, and bowls. While the dishwasher can give a mean clean, it certainly won’t do everything. Scraping off food into the trash bin (or finishing eating every last bit) will keep the level of gunk down that your dishwasher has to deal with. Another tip: pre-rinsing is probably unnecessary and may be a waste of water.

Don’t Overload

While a full load will reap the fullest results, beware of overstocking your machine. Stacking and cramming will result in a subpar clean, as your dishwasher will not be able to reach every nook and cranny.

Load Up Right

Cups and plasticware go on the top, while plates, bowls, and heavier objects go on the bottom rack. Stagger your cutlery in its drawer, with some facing up and some facing down, so that the water can reach a greater surface area. Angle cups downward and position pans and large containers in the back, farthest from the door.

Don’t Use Too Much Detergent

Too much detergent will produce a slimier result than desired and can clog up the system. To know the best measurement of soap to use, refer to your dishwasher or detergent manufacturer’s instructions.

Routine White Vinegar Rinse

We rely on our dishwasher to do the big haul for us, but sometimes our machine needs us to return the favor. When our dishwasher needs to get clean, one of the easiest and most effective ways to sanitize it is to place one cup of white vinegar in the middle upper rack and set the dishwasher on a short, hot cycle. The difference will amaze you!
