How to Remove Burnt Smell from Microwave Ovens

Got burnt food smell in your microwave? Zap that stench with these tips!

Did you accidentally burn food in your microwave oven? You’re not alone. Thankfully, there is a way to remove that horrible burnt smell from your microwave and make it smell better than ever. Plus, you’ll be sanitizing it. Learn the simple steps to remove burnt smell from microwave ovens below!

How to Remove Burnt Smell from Microwave Ovens

Clean the Oven Interior

The first step is to remove any loose burnt bits that you can. It’s likely that some loose pieces of the burnt remains are still scattered in the microwave oven, contributing to the nasty burnt smell. You can wipe down your microwave’s interior with some water and mild dish soap or white vinegar.

Soften Dirt with a Strong, Natural Cleaner

If the burnt smell still lingers, you can do even more by loosening any burnt particles by microwaving a bowl of white vinegar, lemon juice, or a combination. For an extra kick, add some baking soda. Microwave the liquid solution in a microwaveable bowl for 3-4 minutes. It will create steam infused with white vinegar, lemon, or baking soda, which loosens the burnt particles. Wipe down the residual with a clean cloth or paper towel.

Soak Odors Up with an Overnight Solution

Is the smell really severe? You could do the above two steps, along with the third. Place an open container of baking soda in the microwave and let it sit inside there overnight. Other substances you can use to soak up odors include activated charcoal and coffee grounds.

Check the Charcoal Filter

It is possible that the burnt smell got into your microwave oven’s charcoal filter, which helps filter out odors. It is recommended to replace your charcoal filter every six months; you cannot clean this filter. Replacing it, especially if it is older than six months, should help with this smell and future smells.

Take the Microwave Oven Outside

Is the microwave oven full of smoke from the burnt food? If it is really bad, unplug the appliance and take it outside until all the smoke is gone before cleaning it thoroughly.

How to Prevent Burnt Smells in Microwave Ovens

You can prevent future accidental burns by only microwaving food that is hydrated enough. If the food is dry, like popcorn or toast, it is more likely to burn when reheated.
