Saving Water with Your Washing Machine

Saving Water with Your Washing Machine

April 22 is Earth Day! No matter what time of year it is, you can always save water through your HE washing machine.

April 22, 2021, is Earth Day! There’s no better day than that to appreciate the beauty and complexity of the natural world; between the deepest ocean and the farthest star, there is a lot to take in! However, keeping it down to earth, one can also take this time to consider various ways to help take care of this beautiful planet. One of the best ways is through water conservation, since using less water keeps more of it in our rivers and estuaries. What’s the best way to start? You can start by saving water with your washing machine.

Saving Water with HE Washers

Energy Star is a program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that rigorously tests products and evaluates their energy efficiency. An Energy Star certified washing machine uses the least amount of water per load for its type.

If you are looking for the best deal in HE (high efficiency), Energy Star appliances, Whirlpool has plenty in store for you. Their washing machines save around 6 gallons of water per load, using about 14 gallons as opposed to 20. All in all, Whirlpool’s HE washers use about 25% less energy and 33% less water than regular machines.

How HE Washers Give a Great Clean

Washing Action

The quantity of water used in a cycle can impact the quality of the wash. As a principle, one must note that a front-loading washing machine will always clean better than a top-loading appliance, since the gravity and friction in front-loaders is more effective than the agitators in top-loaders. With less water, HE appliances create a higher concentration of detergent and a more rigorous clean overall.

Detergent Type

The detergent you use also matters. If you have an HE appliance, you ought to also use HE detergent. This type of detergent is formulated specifically with less water volume in mind. HE detergent works for all types of washing machines.

Loading Right

You can also help the washing process immensely by loading the washing machine right. Surely anyone knows how to do this, yet there is some strategy to it. One should provide a large enough load that it fills the barrel without overstuffing it. Clothes, towels, and bedding should fit in loosely and not bunched up. This way, the washer won’t miss a spot.

Other Factors in Saving Water with Your Washing Machine

While an HE washing machine and strategic washing tips can help you save water, other factors such as how often you use the washer, how large your loads are, how hefty your loads are, and what rinse cycle you use will also affect how much water you ultimately use. However, if your laundry needs cleaning, it needs cleaning, and the water you use will be well spent.
