The Sabbath Mode on Ovens, Fridges, and More

The Sabbath Mode on Ovens, Fridges, and More

The Sabbath mode on kitchen appliances is made for days of purposeful rest.

In recent years, the Sabbath mode is becoming more prevalent on kitchen appliances like ovens, refrigerators, wine coolers, and dishwashers. The idea first came to Whirlpool in 1997 and has since expanded to GE, LG, and other brands. This appliance setting has Jewish celebrations and the Shabbat in mind. Even if you do not practice the religious law, the Sabbath mode on ovens, fridges, and more can be beneficial if you honor a Sabbath day or want a day of purposeful rest.

What Is the Sabbath Mode?

The Sabbath mode on kitchen appliances allows households to unplug and abstain from doing work on religious days of rest and still be able to access provisions and keep them warm or cold, depending. One cannot change settings on appliances when this mode is on, and it will shut down digital signals and some functions.

The Sabbath Mode on Ovens

For ovens, one can only use the oven to warm food in on this setting. The oven will stay on baking mode and will not automatically turn off after 12 hours. It is ideal for warming up already cooked foods throughout the day. The oven will not display temperature or the clock, will not beep, and will not activate the self-cleaning feature.

The Sabbath Mode on Fridges

Similarly, refrigerators in the Sabbath mode will disable audible signals, digital displays, and the water and ice dispenser. It will also keep the interior light from turning on when you open the refrigerator. The fridge will continue to keep food cool using a timed defrost. One cannot adjust the settings on a fridge in this mode. If there is a power outage while it is on Sabbath mode, it will continue the mode when the power returns.

Other Sabbath Mode Appliances

Wine coolers and dishwashers also may have this up-and-coming mode. The typical way to activate and deactivate it on all appliances is to hold the applicable button or touchscreen button down until it turns on or off.
