Gas vs. Electric Stove Considerations

Gas vs. Electric Stove Considerations

Gas or electric? Below are some considerations on how to choose.

When your range is getting down on its last legs, you’ll want to think carefully about which type of stove you’ll want to get next. The debate between gas and electric is no cool one, yet both have their advantages. While both have their pros and cons, you will want to consider your kitchen and cooking style as well.

What Type of Power Does Your House Use?

First consider what type of power your house is set up to have, gas or electric? It will be cheaper to set up your new range if it runs on the same power source as your house.

Cost

Gas stoves are typically pricier than electric ones upfront. However, it is the electric stove that reaps the higher bills.

Efficiency in Cooking

Gas and electric are neck-and-neck when it comes to efficiency. In the 2018 Consumer Report, electric stoves superseded gas ones in most categories of cooking. Gas stoves proved better tools in baking evenly than electric. However, a gas oven may not be as good at preparing the perfect roast, as gas produces a moist heat and electric creates a drier heat. At the same time, Consumer Report saw little difference between the performances of gas vs. electric. Of all the models available, there is plenty of either kind that can let you cook up a storm.

Safety

Overall, gas is the more dangerous heat source to use. Working with fire is always dangerous, and a leak in the connection between your stove and the line, you risk inhaling noxious fumes and a house fire. With electric, only an issue with the electric system will put a damper on your cooking. With electric, there is also a slightly higher chance of accidentally touching a hot surface.

Appearance

Lastly, there is the consideration of appearance. Electric stoves can come in sleek, flat surfaces, while gas stovetops have individual grates. The smooth, glass surfaces of electric stoves may be more fragile or easy to stain than the gas stove surface, but gas stove grates can be more difficult to clean. In the end, the choice is up to you, and either way, you will be able to cook with ease.
