How to Choose a Refrigerator Size

Wondering what the ideal refrigerator size is for your household? Read on below!

There comes a time when every refrigerator needs a replacement. Perhaps it has run its last round, or maybe you are renovating your kitchen and want an upgrade. A refrigerator is a significant purchase and one not to take lightly. To help you weigh your choices, here a brief guide on how to choose the perfect refrigerator size.

Cubic Space

One standard way to measure what refrigerator size your home should have is by cubic space. The standard is to give 4-6 cubic feet for every person in the household. One can use a cubic foot calculator to determine the width, height, and depth that might translate to.

Refrigerator Style

Meanwhile, even if a fridge has the same measurements, it won’t necessarily have the same amount of room inside it. However, your ultimate decision will depend on the numerous factors that come with every design.

The four main types of fridges include the top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and French door. The side-by-side model has the freezer on one side and the refrigeration on the other, while the French door version has one bottom freezer. In general, the top-freezer model holds the most room.

Remember to leave enough room behind and beside your appliance so it has room to “breathe” in the back and enough room on the sides so the door can swing open all the way.

Depth

When considering the depth of the appliance, one can get the standard for the model or counter depth. With the latter choice, the fridge will be flush with the countertop depth and give your kitchen a streamlined look. Of course, it will reduce the original storage space you might have had with the standard model.

Door Size

Once you have determined the ideal refrigerator size and style for your home, you still have one more measurement to make. You still need to have a way to get the appliance inside your house. It will be no problem if your house has double doors, but otherwise, you’ll need to measure the door width accurately so you can get the fridge indoors.
