How to Tell When to Replace Your Refrigerator

How to Tell When to Replace Your Refrigerator
Is your fridge giving you issues? Here’s how you know when to get a new one.

Your refrigerator is a trusty appliance, tried and true throughout the long years of chilling your produce and leftover food. However, there comes a time to give your fridge a rest from its labor and get a brand new one. While it may be tempting to keep living with the one you’ve used for ages, certain signs will inform you that it’s time to go “out with the old and in with the new.”

Your Refrigerator Has Cold Sweats

If there is excess condensation around your refrigerator, something is wrong. It shouldn’t be working that hard to keep your perishable goods fresh. Fear not! It may just be a case of an unsealed door. This is testable by closing a piece of paper in the fridge door and seeing how easily it slides out. The fix can be a do-it-yourselfer. If your refrigerator has condensation on the inside, though, this may be a sign that the refrigerator’s internal temperature is irregular. You will want to call a professional in this case.

Your Refrigerator Is Hot

Another problem is a refrigerator that is hot to the touch. While the regular temperature of your fridge has room to shift, excessive heat is a problem. Call your appliance technician to check the refrigerator’s coils. In the case that the coils have malfunctioned, you can have them replaced. If the refrigerator is particularly old, you may just consider getting a new one.

Your Refrigerator Is Frozen

You may want to start singing “Let It Go” despite that this kind of cold does bother you. We are not speaking of the regular frozen temperatures you’d want your freezer to keep at. If your fridge has a build-up of ice and frost, it is important to take care of the problem as soon as possible to avoid your food getting freezer burn. There are multiple causes for this with simple fixes, such as fixing the sealing or keeping the freezer door open for a minimum amount of time. If the problem persists to no avail, it is time to get a new fridge.

Other Signs

Two other tell-tale signs is a refrigerator that is clearly old and one in which your food spoils quicker than normal. If your fridge is between 10-20 years old, it may be time to look for another good deal out there. As keeping your food fresh is of top concern, it is important to invest in the right appliance when necessary.
