How to Load a Dishwasher Correctly

How do a stack a dishwasher? Is there one right way? Discover the answer here!

How to load a dishwasher correctly: it appears to be a question that spurs much controversy and near strife in everyday households. Is there a right way or a wrong way to load the dishwasher? Are there different ways that are equally valid? Whether you stack from back to front or front to back might not matter much, but there is a correct way to stack the dishes depending on your appliance’s configuration. In general, it will look something like this.

The Top Rack

Many new dishwashers feature a shallow top rack above the two deeper traditional dishwasher racks. This top rack is perfect for loading smaller, more unusual items such as ladles, measuring cups, small plates, cups, etc. You could also use it for utensils, if that is what it is designed to hold. One should lay bowls and cups upside down and layer items evenly and in the appropriate slots.

The Second Rack

The second rack is best for smaller, everyday dishes like cups, bowls, and small plates. Place bowls and cups upside down and small plates between the tines. Whirlpool recommends placing the cups along the perimeter and angling plates and bowls downward and facing the center.

The Third Rack

The third rack is for the largest and heaviest items. Stack dinner plates between the tines at a downward angle facing the center and large bowls and bakeware upside down or on their sides along the perimeter.

The Utensils Basket

One can stock the utensils basket however one wishes; if there are individual slots for each utensil, one idea is to alternate between forks and spoons, keeping the handle down. Knives can go in with the handle up. If each compartment allows for multiple utensils together, putting some handle up and some handle down can help keep them evenly spaced for thorough washing.

Extra Tips to Load a Dishwasher

  • Avoid overloading the dishwasher, which can make it impossible for the washer to reach some dirty spots on your dishware.
  • Make sure to load only dishwasher safe items.
  • Today’s dishwashers allow you to skip soaking the dishes in the sink; the appliance is made to take off all grime.
