Should You Pre-rinse Your Dishes?

Should You Pre-rinse Your Dishes?

Here’s why you don’t need to pre-rinse your dishes anymore.

One of the biggest controversies concerning dishwashers is whether to pre-rinse your dishes or leave them be. Many people have grown up faithful to this habit and might be skeptical of the idea that pre-rinsing is unnecessary. Indeed, there are several reasons why this chore is something every homeowner can happily ditch for good.

Counteractive Rinsing

Dishwashers and dishwasher detergents have improved over the years. Even if you have a dishwasher older than ten years, you are likely using a detergent designed only recently. Detergents latch onto food remains to break them down; rinsing your dishes smooth beforehand can disable the detergent from working at all. Meanwhile, dishwashers today have soil level sensors that detect how much gunk there is. If you pre-rinse your dishes, you may be throwing its calculations off and ending up with a less powerful rinse than your dishware needs. Of course, this is not to say to leave on leftovers; there is just no need to rinse the hard stuff off.

Wasting Water

Because dishwashers are made to handle that tough, stuck-on grime, one begins to see how much water and energy gets wasted every year by pre-rinsing dishes. According to Consumer Reports, someone could be wasting up to 6,000 gallons of water by doing this task. If one uses hot water, that uses up electricity as well. The savings on water, electricity, and dishwasher efficiency are incredible.

Saving Time

You have a win-win situation when you finally let go of pre-rinsing your dishes. Even if you are still skeptical, why not give it a try? Once you see how well the dishwasher does on its own, you can happily go about your day attending more important things in life.

When to Rinse

The only condition in which it may be okay to pre-rinse your dishes is if you are leaving a dirty load out overnight. Dirty dishes can attract pests and cause a stench, so a gentle rinse can quench those threats. However, it is better to put them directly into the machine and put on the rinse-only cycle.

Getting the Cleanest Dishes

Ditching the chore of pre-rinsing dishes is definitely one way to get the cleanest dishware. Along with that, stacking the appliance according to the manual, using a rinse aid, and using the appropriate detergent are other ways to get those shining plates.
