It might be that time when your dishwasher is ancient, not energy-efficient, and is worth less than the cost to repair it. If that is the case, then it is time to buy a new dishwasher and enjoy all the new features that come with one. Measuring is an essential step in determining what size dishwasher you will need for your dishwasher replacement. Width
One can start with a handy measuring tape and check the interior width of the dishwasher space. From cabinet to cabinet, you will know the maximum space your dishwasher has. The standard width for a dishwasher is 24 inches wide. If you are placing a unit between two cabinets, make sure there is still a little room on each side. If you are placing it between a cabinet and a wall, keep a space of two inches between the appliance and the wall.
Height
The next step is to measure the height. This is trickier than one might think, depending on if the kitchen floor is level or not. To be on the safe side, it is best to measure the height at the front on the left and right sides plus the height at the back of the space. If the heights differ, you can still keep your dishwasher level through its adjustable feet.
Depth
Lastly, measure the depth of the dishwasher space, starting from the interior back wall to the edge of the cabinetry. The new dishwasher will likely extend slightly beyond the wall. Remember to write down all of your measurements of the dishwasher space, so you will have an immediate reference when searching for the right appliance.
Room for the Door
Another tip to measure a dishwasher is to measure 27 inches out from the edge of the cabinet into the kitchen floor. Dishwasher doors can extend out between 21 and 27 inches into the kitchen; once you know what that will look like, make sure there is enough space to walk comfortably around it without hampering traffic.
