Whirlpool Dryer Repairs in Gibson Island, MD, 21056 landers appliance

Keep your laundry area pest-free by protecting your dryer vent.

Wild animals can cause a raucous when they get inside your home. It might be easy enough to corral a pest out your door, but it is a lot harder if it is between your walls or in your ceiling. The dryer vent is one opening that you do not want wildlife to crawl into. Although the moist warmth of the vent and fluffy lint might make the dryer vent seem like a great home, it could do a lot of damage to both parties. Keep animals out of clothes dryer vents with these tips!

How to Keep Animals Out of Clothes Dryer Vents

The best way to keep animals out of clothes dryer vents is very simple. An exterior dryer vent cover that is installed properly is usually all you need to do to show mice, squirrels, birds, etc., that this opening is off-limits. Make sure to caulk around the edges of the dryer vent cover, but not block your ability to unscrew the cover for cleaning purposes.

How to Maintain the Dryer Vent

From time to time, it will benefit you to clean the dryer vent. You can use a dryer vent brush and a vacuum to loosen and remove any fluff stuck in there from the clothes dryer end and the exterior end. This cleaning is essential for preventing dryer vent fires, which are unfortunately more common than you think. For regular fire prevention, remove the lint from the lint tray before and after you dry your laundry.

Signs of a Rodent Infestation in Your Dryer Vent

If you do have pests in your dryer vent, you may be able to hear squeaks, chirps, or moving about. You might also smell urine and see small dark rice pellets, which are mouse droppings.

How to Handle Pests in the Dryer Vent

If you do have an infestation, remove the pests with care or call a professional. As for the dryer, replace the tube connecting the dryer to the vent if it is dirty or damaged, and wipe the interior of your dryer thoroughly.
