Washing Machine Maintenance Tips

Washing Machine Maintenance Tips

Increase your washing machine’s lifespan with these easy tips!

The washing machine is an all-important appliance. While ranges cook and bake our food and dishwashers keep our plates and cups pristine, our washers put in the elbow grease to keep us well-clothed. Landers Appliance serves Maryland with its excellent appliance repair and distribution services. If your washing machine has an issue or breaks down, don’t hesitate to call Landers for assistance. To keep your washer in the best condition possible, though, you can put these easy washing machine maintenance tips into action.

1. Wash Smaller Loads

It can be tempting to stuff all your clothes into the machine’s drum to get everything washed in one round. However, it is better for your clothes and your washer if you keep the load lighter, but full enough to fill the drum. Not too heavy and not too light will help keep the machine running for longer.

2. Measure Detergent

Detergent is designed to get all the dirt out of your clothes with precision. Its scent perfumes all the fabrics with freshness. On the other hand, it is also a sticky, gooey substance, and too much of it can be bad for the washing machine and your clothes. While your clothes may end up a little soapy, the machine will get stuck with gunk over time. Follow the directions for how much to add to the drum and add any extra into the drum itself.

3. Wash the Washer

The washer does need washing. The best practice is to run an empty washing machine on a hot water cycle along with two cups of white vinegar in the detergent dispenser. Doing this once a month will keep any mold, mildew, or foul odors away.

4. Clean the Door

The condition of the door of a washer is important when it comes to the appliance’s cleanliness. It’s healthy to wipe down the door with a disinfectant, outside and inside, at least once a month. Don’t forget to clean the gasket also, which is the insulating rubber part that keeps the door sealed. To prevent mold and mildew, keep the door open after doing a load.

5. Check the Hoses

Maintenance for a washing machine also includes checking the foundational aspects of the appliance. The water hoses at the back of it can crack or leak over time; keeping an eye on these once a year can save you a major flooding.

6. Keep It Grounded

Lastly, if your washer is tilting or moving, it may be that the floor is uneven. Keep the machine level to avoid malfunctioning parts and heavier wear and tear. With the above maintenance tips, your machine can last for a long time!
