Refrigerators: Replace or Repair?

Refrigerators: Replace or Repair?

Consider these factors when deciding to repair or replace your fridge.

Refrigerators are a staple in the kitchen and one of the focal points in kitchen design. It’s an appliance that few can do without, and if something does go wrong, one household’s food risks getting spoiled. The biggest question concerning what to do is whether to replace or repair the refrigerator. Depending on the problem, the age, and the type of refrigerator, one option will be better than the other.

Common Problems with Refrigerators

Refrigerators across the board can display the same kinds of problems, and some are more severe than others. A faulty ice maker or water filter are two common sights, which a professional can take care of in a jiffy. If the refrigerator is hotter than usual, making a loud humming noise, or leaking, call an appliance technician. A technician can safely inspect and fix the problem. If your freezer is colder than it should be, your food will risk freezer burn. It is possible to remediate this problem yourself, but it may be wise to call a professional to get to the source of the issue. If your refrigerator is not cold enough and food is spoiling, it may simply be not efficient enough.

Refrigerator Age

Refrigerators typically last around 13 years before they have to go. However, there is an age range between when it is worth it to replace or repair. Your refrigerator will last longer and be more worth repairing depending on how well you maintain it over the years. Cleaning the refrigerator’s parts routinely can help prevent it from overworking and damaged gaskets. Positioning is also crucial; keep the appliance from touching the back wall and away from other appliances like the microwave or stove. Keeping the refrigerator well-stocked also improves its performance.

Refrigerator Type

Besides age and maintenance, the type of appliance it is is another factor. Experts agree with Consumer Reports’ 2011 guidelines for when to repair or replace various types of models. Built-in fridges are often work repairing; side-by-side refrigerators need replacing if an issue occurs after five years of age. Bottom and top-freezer models should both retire if they break down after seven years.
