How to Use a Dishwasher

The simple yet strategic steps of how to use a dishwasher are all in this post!

In the Landers Appliance blog, we have talked about all kinds of topics related to dishwashers. Examples include the benefits of using a dishwasher, how to buy a new one, and weird ways to use it. But what about the normal way to use it? Below you’ll find out exactly how to use a dishwasher for your daily dishware sanitization.

To Pre-Rinse or Not to Pre-Rinse?

One unspoken step to using a dishwasher is pre-rinsing. Should you pre-rinse your dishes? This step has been a habit in many households for decades, but today’s models typically do not require this step. As long as you remove the significant chunks of food left on the plate or bowl, your dishes are good to go.

Load the Dishwasher

Most dishwashers have two racks and a utensil basket. Check to make sure all items you put in the dishwasher are dishwasher safe. Overall, do not let the dishes overlap, making sure that all surfaces are reachable by the hot water and detergent.

Load cups into the top rack upside down. Other items that go in the top rack include small bowls and plates. Also, put plastic lids of your food containers in the top rack to avoid melting.

Load the bottom rack with large plates, bowls, food storage containers, pots, and pans.

Lastly, place forks, spoons, and knives in the utensil basket. Position sharp knives upward so they do not cut into the plastic basket over time. This means you will need to be careful when putting them away!

Apply Detergent

The detergent dispenser is usually on the dishwasher door’s interior side. There are many types of dishwasher detergents; it is best to get the kind suitable for your machine. If you think a little extra detergent is necessary, drizzle a small amount on top of the dispenser after you close it. You can also apply rinse aid if your dishwasher has a dispenser for it.

Select a Setting

Most dishwashers have at least these three settings: quick, normal, and heavy-duty. If you just need a light cleaning for your dishes, quick is all that’s needed. The normal setting is for everyday use for average dirty dishes. Heavy-duty is naturally for dishes with serious, stuck-on grime and for pots and pans.

Turn It On

All you have left to do is shut the dishwasher door if you haven’t already and press start! A light on the control panel will let you know when the load is done.
