Should You Own a Chest Freezer?

Should You Own a Chest Freezer?

Do you think it’s a good idea to invest in a chest freezer? Here are some of its benefits.

It’s always wise to look ahead and be prepared. When it comes to readying oneself for a natural disaster of some sort, the house’s food supply is generally the first place Americans consider. It is always a good practice to keep your pantry stocked with goods: there’s nothing like canned or dried food to complete a kitchen. However, one can do better than just include the preserved provisions. Consider the chest freezer and all its advantages.

Best Placement for a Chest Freezer

A well-prepared homeowner should not think of buying a chest freezer until he knows of the perfect spot to put one. Chest freezers are short and broad compared to the upright fridge-freezer combo and need ample room. The ideal place to put this secondary freezer is in a dry, cool place, not too hot and not too cold. In either case, the appliance will not work as efficiently. People can get creative with their chest freezer places; the walk-in closet, the laundry room, the basement, or the garage are some ideas.

Store Bulk Meats

Whether you decide to purchase a chest freezer or not takes into consideration how you will use it. In the case of an emergency, you can always have fresh meats of all kinds available if you have an extra freezer. It is also convenient if you hunt or buy a whole or large portion of animal meat, like pig or cow.

Store Fresh Produce

With an extra freezer, you won’t have to rely on your canned beans for sustenance alone. Fresh produce can stay nutritious and intact for long periods when frozen. Vegetables can stay fresh for 18 months, while fruits can last up to a year. To prepare your vegetables, blanch them by boiling, draining, and immediately putting them in an ice bath. Store them in airtight containers or freezer bags with as little air in them as possible. Berries freeze well, and fruits that tend to brown like apples can get a vitamin C treatment before storing and freezing.

Stash Away Desserts

In the summertime, it’s always nice to be able to grab your favorite popsicle or ice cream treat as you spend time in the sun. Keeping frozen desserts in the freezer can save room for more substantial food in your refrigerator’s freezer, and can make staycations and vacations more delicious.

Save Time & Money

Your average chest freezer is not expensive to buy, and generally costs less than a normal refrigerator. For long-term planning, keeping an extra store of frozen goods can save you time in daily life and save expenses as well.
