What Is the Soil Level on a Washer?

What Is the Soil Level on a Washer?

Ever wonder what the soil level on a washer is and if you need it? Here are your answers!

Clothes get dirty, but sometimes, they hardly get dirty, or, in rare cases, they are so soiled that you wonder if recovery is possible. That’s where the soil level on a washer comes in. Choosing the right one will help you get the most accurate setting possible for your clothes washing needs. If you ever need any other washing machine advice or repair, Landers Appliance is there for you in Baltimore, Maryland!

What Is a Soil Level on a Washer?

The soil level indicates how dirty the washing machine will think your clothes are. Depending on the level you choose, the washer will use a gentle, moderate, or aggressive agitation mode. It ultimately determines how much your washer will agitate the clothes to scrub the dirt off. Check with your particular model how it affects water usage; a higher setting does not necessarily mean more water used, but it is possible depending on the model.

Three Soil Levels

Light

How do you use the typical three soil level settings on a washer? The “light” level means that the clothes are either delicate or are lightly worn. It typically goes hand-in-hand with delicate fabrics. Using this setting can make the washing cycle shorter.

Normal

The “normal” setting is for everyday clothing that gets regular use without serious stains. If you use a stain treatment beforehand where needed, you could still use this soil level. In general, it is for your everyday fabrics that are not delicate and not bulky.

Heavy

The heavy setting covers the cleaning needs for your heavy-duty items like machine washable coats, towels, bedding, blankets, etc. It can also be for your everyday garments that are especially dirty and can take the harsher treatment.

Soil Level vs. Wash Cycle

Although it may seem like the soil level directly corresponds with the fabric type, it is really meant to adjust the cleaning based on how dirty your load is. A wash cycle is separate and has many more options. For example, you might need to wash garments that have a normal soil level but need to be wrinkle-free, so you use the normal soil level with a perm press cycle.
