Gas vs. Electric Dryers: The Differences

Gas vs. Electric Dryers: The Differences

Do you prefer a gas or electric dryer? Here is how each is different.

If you are on the hunt for a new dryer for your home, the process of finding the right one can be a daunting task. In fact, there are many different dryers out there to choose from, so knowing the best type that’ll work best in your home can be challenging without the proper information. One can simplify the decision-making process by understanding the most common types of dryers: gas and electric. Choosing the right dryer can be harder than it looks, but ultimately, knowing the key differences between a gas dryer and an electric one can inform you and allow you to make the best decision for your home.

Understanding Gas Dryers

When it comes to gas dryers, a few advantages stick out. Gas dryers are typically designed to be more energy-efficient than their electric counterparts. Additionally, gas dryers traditionally dry your clothes a lot faster than other types of dryers while also only needing to use a standard electrical outlet to operate. In fact, despite their name, gas dryers actually need electricity to work properly. It is the heating element that runs on gas. Believe it or not, a gas dryer uses less electricity compared to its electric counterparts. This factor alone is a crucial reason why homeowners might invest in gas dryers instead of an electric model.

Understanding Electric Dryers

Electric dryers also come with some specific benefits compared to gas dryers. Electric dryers tend to have a larger and wider selection of models to choose from, which gives a homeowner more flexibility. Additionally, electric dryers are usually less expensive upfront than gas-powered dryers. They are also easier for the expert DIYer to handle when a problem occurs, although it is generally best to leave electrical appliance repair work to a true professional. One should also realize that electric dryers require a 240-volt outlet as they cannot be plugged into a standard outlet, but some homes will already have this feature. Ultimately, electric dryers are usually the more affordable option upfront, have more options, and dry clothes effectively.
